Free 3D Models for Game Development: 4,000+ CC0 Assets
Published April 8, 2026
Finding high-quality free 3D models for game development is one of the biggest hurdles for indie creators. You either spend hours browsing scattered repositories, deal with incompatible formats, or discover that the "free" license has strings attached.
VXLVERSE solves this by bundling over 4,000 CC0-licensed 3D models directly into the editor. Every model is free to use in any project, with no attribution required.
What CC0 Means for You
CC0 (Creative Commons Zero) is the most permissive license available. When a 3D model is released under CC0, the creator has waived all copyright. This means you can:
- Use the models in personal and commercial projects
- Modify, remix, and adapt them however you want
- Publish games using them without attribution
- Combine them with other assets without license conflicts
No royalties, no credit requirements, no legal worries. You focus on building your game, not reading license agreements.
What Categories Are Available?
The VXLVERSE asset library is organized into categories that cover the most common game development needs:
- Characters — Heroes, villagers, merchants, guards, fantasy races
- Enemies — Skeletons, demons, wolves, golems, dragons
- Buildings — Houses, castles, shops, taverns, ruins
- Nature — Trees, rocks, flowers, grass, terrain pieces
- Weapons — Swords, bows, staffs, shields, armor pieces
- Props — Furniture, crates, barrels, signs, chests
- Animals — Horses, birds, fish, farm animals, mythical creatures
- Vehicles — Carts, boats, wagons
All models are in GLB format (the binary version of glTF), which is the standard for real-time 3D on the web. They load fast, render efficiently, and support PBR materials out of the box.
How to Browse and Use the Models
Inside the VXLVERSE editor, press O to open the Asset Browser. You can search by name, filter by category, or scroll through the visual grid.
Click any model to place it directly in your scene. From there, use the transform tools to position, rotate, and scale it:
- G to move
- R to rotate
- S to scale
You can also assign behaviors to models. Turn a character into an NPC with dialogue, a merchant with a shop, or an enemy with patrol routes and combat stats.
Performance and Optimization
VXLVERSE automatically optimizes how models are rendered. Static props (trees, rocks, furniture) use thin instancing, which means hundreds of identical objects share a single draw call. This keeps your game running smoothly even with complex scenes.
The engine also caches loaded models, so placing the same tree fifty times only loads the mesh data once.
Bring Your Own Models
The built-in library is just the starting point. You can import your own GLB files from tools like Blender, Kenney.nl, Sketchfab, or any other source. Drag and drop your file into the editor and it works alongside the built-in assets.
